DiscoverCars vs EconomyBookings: where your money goes when plans change

Two established brokers with near-identical headline promises. Their current terms reveal real differences in refund deadlines, damage-cover limits and claim windows.

On the surface, DiscoverCars and EconomyBookings make the same offer: thousands of rental desks, a comparison grid, optional excess cover, and free cancellation up to 48 hours before pick-up. The real differences only appear when you ask what happens to your money after you cancel, or after a rental company charges your excess — and the two companies' current terms answer those questions differently.

What we found

  • Both now refund to credit by default. Cancel more than 48 hours out and DiscoverCars issues Booking Credit; EconomyBookings credits an E-Wallet.[1][2]
  • The cash-back deadlines differ sharply: one year at DiscoverCars, six months at EconomyBookings.[1][2]
  • Excess cover works the same way — reimbursement — but with different limits and deadlines. EconomyBookings caps Full Coverage at EUR 1,700 with a 30-day claim window; DiscoverCars' limit is set on each voucher, with 90 days to claim.[2][1]
  • EconomyBookings sells a paid add-on for late cancellation, allowing cancellation up to one hour before pick-up for credit. DiscoverCars has no equivalent in its terms.[2]

The two companies in brief

DiscoverCars is operated by Travel Drive GmbH of Zug, Switzerland, and processes some payments through affiliates in the UAE and Latvia.[1] It says it started in 2013 and now works with more than 1,000 rental companies in 164 countries.[3]

EconomyBookings is a trademark of Booking Group Corporation Ltd, registered in Latvia.[2] The company says Booking Group was founded in Riga in May 2008, launched the website in 2009, and has partnered with 890 suppliers.[4]

The companies describe their roles differently. EconomyBookings says it acts "solely as an intermediary" and that your contract is concluded directly with the supplier.[2] DiscoverCars says it sells a travel package as principal while a supplier provides the car.[1] For most renters, the practical effect is similar: the rental agreement you sign at the desk is with the local company.

Section numbers refer to DiscoverCars' terms of 23 March 2026 and EconomyBookings' terms effective 21 July 2026.

The most consequential line is the second one. With DiscoverCars, you have a year to decide you would rather have the money. With EconomyBookings, the window for a free withdrawal closes six months after the cancellation — and if you accept a bonus for leaving refunded money in the E-Wallet, the terms say it stops being withdrawable altogether (6.5).[1][2]

EconomyBookings' Last Minute Cancellation

EconomyBookings sells an optional product that extends the cancellation window to one hour before pick-up (section 12).[2] The fee itself is never refunded, and the rules are tiered: cancel 48 hours or more ahead and you can withdraw the rental amount to your card (forfeiting the fee); cancel between one and 48 hours ahead and the money can only be used as credit for a future booking.[2] It suits someone whose plans are uncertain but who will almost certainly rent from the platform again.

Excess cover: two reimbursement products

Both companies sell something called Full Coverage, and in both cases it is a reimbursement product sold by the broker, not cover provided by the rental company. You leave the supplier's deposit, the supplier charges any excess, and you claim it back afterwards.[1][2]

EconomyBookings also notes that some Full Coverage is sold under the Renasco brand, with written complaints answered within 20 business days and a route to Latvia's central bank if you are not satisfied.[2] Both lists of exclusions are similar: negligent driving, breaches of the rental agreement, personal belongings, third-party damage and natural disasters are outside the cover.[1][2]

Deposits and payment cards

Neither broker takes your deposit; the supplier does. EconomyBookings is blunter about the card you will need: the security deposit is a credit card pre-authorisation in the main driver's name, typically released within 30 days, and debit, prepaid, electronic-only and neobank cards are "generally not accepted" unless the offer says otherwise.[2] DiscoverCars says a card hold usually lapses within three weeks when nothing is owed, and it sells some offers with a deposit-free guarantee instead.[1]

If you do not have a credit card, that deposit-free feature is the clearest practical difference between the two. Read the conditions carefully: DiscoverCars can invoice you for any amount it pays the supplier and expects payment within ten business days.[1]

Other differences worth knowing

  • Price-drop rebooking. For fully prepaid bookings, EconomyBookings may rebook you if the price falls before 72 hours ahead of pick-up, crediting the saving to your E-Wallet. It does not guarantee to do so.[2]
  • Voucher timing. EconomyBookings says standard vouchers are delivered up to 72 hours before pick-up; DiscoverCars says confirmation can take up to 48 hours.[2][1]
  • Licence rules. EconomyBookings' terms require a licence held for at least 12 months, subject to the supplier's own rules.[2]
  • Pay later. EconomyBookings offers Affirm (US only) and Klarna. DiscoverCars lists cards, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay.[2][1]

  • Longer window (1 year) to turn credit back into cash
  • 90 days to submit a Full Coverage claim
  • Deposit-free offers for travellers without a credit card

  • Full Coverage limit varies by voucher rather than being a single published figure
  • No paid option to cancel inside 48 hours

EconomyBookings: documented strengths

  • A single published Full Coverage cap (EUR 1,700)
  • Optional Last Minute Cancellation up to one hour before pick-up
  • Price-drop rebooking on some prepaid bookings

EconomyBookings: limitations

  • Only six months to withdraw cancelled-booking money for free
  • 30-day deadline for Full Coverage claims
  • Debit and neobank cards generally not accepted for deposits

Which may suit you?

DiscoverCars may suit travellers who…

  • may need a deposit-free option
  • prefer a longer window to gather paperwork for an excess claim

EconomyBookings may suit travellers who…

  • rent often and will realistically use BookingCredit
  • want the option to pay for last-minute cancellation
  • have a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit

Frequently asked questions

Do DiscoverCars and EconomyBookings refund cancellations to my card?

Not automatically. Both issue account credit by default for cancellations made more than 48 hours before pick-up. DiscoverCars lets you request cash within one year; EconomyBookings lets you withdraw free of charge within six months of cancelling.

Is EconomyBookings Full Coverage the same as the rental company's insurance?

No. It is a separate product sold by EconomyBookings that reimburses the excess charged by the rental company, up to EUR 1,700. You still need to leave the supplier's deposit.

Can I use a debit card with EconomyBookings?

You can pay online with a debit card, but EconomyBookings' terms say you must present a physical credit card in the main driver's name at the desk, and that debit cards are generally not accepted for the deposit unless the offer states otherwise.
