DiscoverCars vs Hola Car Rentals: how do they compare?

Both sell you a car that belongs to somebody else. We read both companies' terms in full to find where they really differ — on who your contract is with, what 'free cancellation' returns, and what their damage cover actually is.

DiscoverCars and Hola Car Rentals do the same basic job: they show you cars from local rental companies and take your booking. But read the small print and they turn out to be built quite differently — one is a Swiss-registered broker that sells you a "travel package" as principal; the other is a Florida-based booking agent that bundles cover into its rates and tells you plainly that it is not a party to your rental contract.

The short answer

  • Scale: DiscoverCars says it covers 164 countries and more than 1,000 suppliers; Hola says it operates in more than 75 countries and does not publish a supplier count. Both figures are the companies' own.[1][2]
  • Cancellation: DiscoverCars' terms turn a cancellation made more than 48 hours before pick-up into Booking Credit, with cash back only on request within a year. Hola advertises free cancellation up to 48 hours, but its terms do not say how refunds are paid.[3][2]
  • Damage cover: DiscoverCars' optional Full Coverage is a reimbursement service, explicitly "not a financial or insurance product". Hola sells rates it says already include cover, with no deductible on selected fares.[3][2]
  • Accountability: DiscoverCars publishes a 90-day complaints window and a 28-day decision target. We found no equivalent timetable in Hola's terms.[3][4]
  • Our view: neither is objectively 'better'. DiscoverCars is the more documented, wider-reaching option; Hola's bundled approach may appeal to US-bound travellers who want cover folded into the price — provided they check what each offer actually includes.

What is DiscoverCars?

DiscoverCars is an online car rental broker run by Travel Drive GmbH, a company registered in Zug, Switzerland.[3] It says it began in 2013 as a three-person start-up called Discover Car Hire and now serves 164 countries through more than 1,000 rental companies.[1]

It does not own cars. Its terms state that the company "does not operate a car vehicle fleet and does not provide car rental services itself" but arranges for a rental company to supply them (clause 1.5).[3] What you buy on the site is described as a "Travel Package": the rental, plus services such as customer support and, optionally, extras like Full Coverage, an arrival guide or an AI-generated route planner.[3]

What is Hola Car Rentals?

Hola Car Rentals is a booking platform operated by Andaluz Group LLC, a Delaware limited liability company, which lists its main headquarters in Miami and further addresses in Fort Lauderdale and Orlando.[4][2] Its App Store listing is published under the same company name, and the app was first released in March 2025.[5]

Hola's terms describe it as "solely a booking agent/intermediary" that facilitates reservations and processes payments on behalf of independent rental companies.[4] Its marketing is built around bundled pricing: an "All Inclusive+" rate, free travel medical cover of up to USD 150,000 for passengers, cashback on tolls, and "at least 45% savings".[2] Its site selector lists eight language versions under "United States", with every other country grouped under "Other countries", and the testimonials it displays refer overwhelmingly to US rentals.[2]

Who is your contract with?

This is the least visible difference between the two sites, and arguably the most important if something goes wrong.

DiscoverCars positions itself as the seller. Its terms say that, regardless of how the money is collected, it "remains the Travel Package Services provider to the Customer as a principal in its own name" (clause 3.10), and that your booking agreement is concluded when it issues a voucher (clause 1.9).[3] You still sign a rental agreement with the local company at the desk, and obligations arising from that document are not governed by DiscoverCars' booking agreement (clause 4.6).[3] In practice, that gives you two relationships: one with DiscoverCars for the package, and one with the supplier for the car.

Hola positions itself as the middleman. Its terms say you "will ultimately enter into a separate rental agreement" with the rental company and that Hola "is not a party to your rental car contract".[4] Questions about vehicle condition or counter charges "should be addressed directly with the rental company". Hola's own liability is capped, in most cases, at the fees you paid to Hola itself.[4]

Labels show how each fact was established. “Verified in terms” means we read it in the company’s binding terms on the date shown; “Company claim” means it comes from the company’s marketing and has not been independently verified.

Cancellation: credit versus 'free'

Both companies use the same headline — free cancellation up to 48 hours before pick-up — and both mean something narrower than many travellers will assume.

DiscoverCars' terms are specific. Cancel more than 48 hours before pick-up and you receive Booking Credit for future bookings (clause 6.2).[3] You can ask for the leftover amount of what you originally paid to be reimbursed in money, but you must do so within one year of receiving the credit (6.16), and refunds are made by international bank transfer or PayPal (6.17). Cancel inside 48 hours and only the cost of Full Coverage, if you bought it, comes back — again as credit (6.3). A booking made less than 48 hours before pick-up is non-refundable from the start (6.6).[3]

Hola's promise is shorter. Its homepage lists "Free Cancellation — Cancel your reservation up to 48 hours before picking up the car free of charge".[2] We found no cancellation schedule in its terms and conditions, and nothing that says whether refunds go back to your card or are held as credit.[4] Its help page says cancellations are made in the "my reservations" section of the mobile app.[6]

Damage cover: reimbursement versus a bundled rate

DiscoverCars sells Full Coverage as an optional add-on. The terms are unusually candid about what it is not: "Full Coverage is not a financial or insurance product" (9.3), it does not replace the rental company's Collision Damage Waiver (9.4), and it does not excuse you from leaving a security deposit (9.7).[3] It works by reimbursement. If the supplier charges your excess, you pay it, then claim it back from DiscoverCars within 90 days with the rental agreement, check-in and check-out records, invoices and proof of payment (9.11). The investigation can take up to 28 days, plus another 28 if more information is needed (9.16).[3]

The list of what it covers is broad — excess for damage and theft, glass, tyres, undercarriage, roof, keys, misfuelling, towing and some administration fees — up to the limit printed on your voucher (9.8).[3] The exclusions matter too: third-party damage, interior damage not caused by an accident, and damage while breaking the rental agreement or the law are not covered (9.10).[3]

Hola takes the opposite approach in its marketing: cover is part of the price. Its homepage advertises "extended car insurance with no deductibles" on "selected fares and itineraries", and its App Store description says all its rates include car rental insurance.[2][5] Its terms, however, separate that promise from Hola itself: any complimentary travel protection is provided "by an independent third-party provider", Hola is "not the insurer or administrator", and claims go to that provider.[4]

Deposits at the desk

With both companies, the security deposit is a matter between you and the rental company. DiscoverCars' terms say the supplier holds or takes it, that it is "not governed by the Booking Agreement", and that a card hold usually lapses within three weeks if nothing is owed (3.15, 3.17).[3] Hola's terms leave payment and deposit requirements to the provider's own rental agreement.[4]

DiscoverCars has one feature Hola does not advertise: on offers labelled deposit-free, DiscoverCars gives the supplier a guarantee instead of you leaving a deposit (section 10).[3] It is not a waiver of liability. If the supplier claims against the guarantee, DiscoverCars can invoice you and expects repayment within ten business days, relying on the supplier's documents as evidence (10.4, 10.10, 10.12).[3] For travellers without a suitable credit card, that can be the difference between collecting a car and being turned away — but the financial exposure has not gone anywhere.

Reviews and ratings: what the numbers do and don't tell you

We do not give either company a score. What we can do is explain the numbers each company shows you.

  • DiscoverCars' About page cites a Trustpilot TrustScore of 4.6 out of 5 "based on hundreds of thousands of real customer reviews".[1] Trustpilot blocked our automated check on 30 September 2026, so we report this as the company's statement.
  • Hola's homepage carries its own review widget, which on 30 September 2026 showed 4.9 stars from 3,415 reviews.[2] These are published by Hola on its own site, so they cannot be treated as independent. The same page says Trustpilot recognises Hola as a leader in customer satisfaction; we could not confirm that.
  • Hola's iOS app showed a 4.7 average from six ratings on the US App Store — far too few to mean much either way.[5]

A broader point applies to both. When a broker's customers leave reviews, they are often reviewing the local supplier's counter staff, cars and deposit practices as much as the broker. The same broker can deliver very different experiences at two airports.

Pricing: what we did and did not test

We have not declared either site cheaper, because we have not run a documented like-for-like price test. Broker prices change constantly and depend on the supplier, location, dates, pick-up time, driver age and currency. A handful of screenshots would not support a general claim, and Hola's "at least 45% savings" guarantee does not state what it is measured against.[2]

What we can say is how the price is built. On DiscoverCars, the total is shown before you choose a payment method, and depending on the offer you may pay part now and the rest at the desk, all of it now, or everything at pick-up (clause 3.8).[3] Extras bought at the desk are outside that total (3.3). Hola's headline benefit is that more is included up front — cover, travel medical insurance, toll cashback — which can make a higher-looking rate cheaper overall, or not, depending on what you would otherwise buy.[2]

DiscoverCars: strengths and limitations

DiscoverCars: documented strengths

  • Detailed, numbered terms covering cancellation, amendments, Full Coverage and complaints
  • Much wider stated coverage: 164 countries and 50,000+ locations (company figures)
  • Deposit-free option on some offers, for travellers without a high-limit credit card
  • A published complaints window (90 days) and decision target (28 days)

DiscoverCars: limitations

  • 'Free cancellation' returns Booking Credit by default; cash must be requested within a year
  • Full Coverage reimburses after the fact, so you still need funds for the supplier's charges
  • Bookings made inside 48 hours of pick-up are non-refundable
  • Disputes are governed by Swiss law and Swiss courts

Hola Car Rentals: strengths and limitations

Hola Car Rentals: documented strengths

  • Rates marketed as including cover, with no deductible on selected fares
  • Extras advertised at no cost: travel medical cover and toll cashback (company claims)
  • WhatsApp, chat and phone support links on the website
  • Clear statement that the supplier, not Hola, is your rental counterparty

Hola Car Rentals: limitations

  • Terms do not set out a cancellation schedule or how refunds are paid
  • No published supplier count; coverage claim of 75+ countries is unverified
  • Headline review score comes from a self-hosted widget
  • Liability generally capped at fees paid to Hola; disputes under Delaware law

Which may suit you?

DiscoverCars may suit travellers who…

  • are renting outside the United States, or somewhere a smaller platform may have few suppliers
  • want to read the rules in advance and know exactly which clause applies
  • do not have a credit card with a large enough limit and can find a deposit-free offer
  • are comfortable holding Booking Credit if their plans change

Hola Car Rentals may suit travellers who…

  • are travelling in the United States and want cover built into the rate
  • prefer messaging-style support such as WhatsApp
  • are happy to manage the booking through a mobile app
  • will check each offer's inclusions line by line before paying

Frequently asked questions

Is Hola Car Rentals legitimate?

Hola Car Rentals is the trading name of Andaluz Group LLC, a Delaware company. It publishes terms and conditions, lists physical addresses in Florida, and its iOS app is published under the same company name. We have not tested a booking with Hola for this article, and we could not confirm the review claims on its homepage.

Does DiscoverCars charge a cancellation fee?

Not if you cancel more than 48 hours before pick-up — but under its terms you receive Booking Credit rather than an automatic refund. You can ask for the leftover amount in money within one year. Inside 48 hours, only any Full Coverage you bought is returned, as credit.

Is DiscoverCars Full Coverage insurance?

No. DiscoverCars' terms say Full Coverage is not a financial or insurance product. It reimburses certain charges, such as your excess, after the rental company has taken them, up to the limit on your voucher.

Who takes the deposit when I book through a broker?

The rental company at the desk, in almost all cases. Both companies' terms leave the deposit to the supplier. The exception is a DiscoverCars offer marked deposit-free, where DiscoverCars guarantees the deposit and can later invoice you for any amount the supplier claims.

Which is cheaper, DiscoverCars or Hola?

We have not found evidence to say either is cheaper in general. Prices vary by supplier, location, dates and driver age. Compare the same car from the same supplier, and include the excess, deposit and what you get back if you cancel.

How we researched this

Facts last checked against sources on

On 30 September 2026 we read DiscoverCars' terms and conditions (last updated 23 March 2026) and Hola Car Rentals' terms and conditions (no version date shown) in full, together with each company's homepage or About page, Hola's cancellation help page and Hola's US App Store listing. Clause numbers in this article refer to DiscoverCars' terms as published on that date; Hola's terms are not numbered.

We separate three kinds of statement: what a company's binding terms say (marked as verified), what a company says in its marketing (attributed as a company claim), and what we could not confirm. Company figures such as country counts and review scores are reported as the companies' own statements; we have not audited them.

We did not make or cancel a booking with either company for this comparison, and we did not run a like-for-like price test. Prices for broker bookings change by the minute and depend on the supplier, location, dates and driver age, so a single snapshot would not tell you which site is cheaper for your trip. If we run a documented price test, we will publish the full search parameters alongside it.
